Photo of Russell K. Portenoy MDDr. Russell K. Portenoy is Chairman, Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care, Beth Israel Medical Center, and Professor of Neurology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and completed a residency in Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in pain management at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Portenoy is a past president of the American Pain Society and the recipient of that society's Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award and the Distinguished Service Award. He currently serves as Secretary of the International Association for the Study of Pain and Vice-Chairman of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Pain Foundation and the National Hospice Foundation.

Dr. Portenoy's research has focused on clinical trials of analgesic drugs, opioid pharmacology, symptom measurement, and quality of life assessment. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Associate Editor for Clinical Sciences of Pain, and Editor for the Palliative Care Sections of both Cancer Investigation and The Oncologist. He has written, co-authored, or edited 14 books and more than 370 papers on topics related to pain and analgesics, treatments for symptoms other than pain, symptom assessment, and quality of life.
