Chapter 27: Dry Mouth and Salivary Gland Dysfunction: Prevalence of Xerostomia

The prevalence of persistent complaints of oral dryness has been examined in different populations in a number of studies (Nederfors, 2000; Field et al., 2001; Pajukoski et al., 2001; Ikebe et al., 2001; Sreebny, 2000; van der Putten, et al., 2003; Guggenheimer, 2003).

  • In the general population: approximately 10% of respondents report daily xerostomia;
  • In elderly populations (>65 years old): the prevalence approaches 25%; and
  • In institutionalized elders: rates may be as high as 45-50%.

The prevalence increases:

  • As the number of prescription medications taken increases;
  • With the number of medical conditions present; and
  • With age (discussed in more detail in the next section).
