Chapter 24: Assessing Desirability of Outcome States: Author Biographies
        

Mary Kane Goldstein, MD, MSc

Mary K. Goldstein, MD, is currently Associate Director for Clinical Services, Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), VA Palo Alto Health Care System; and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research and Associate Professor of Health Research and Policy, both at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is the Director of the Program on Primary Care Policy and Practice Advancement for the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research. She serves on several national boards, including the Executive Committee of the Quality Enhancement Research Initiative-Ischemic Heart Disease (QUERI-IHD), and the Combined Monitoring Board for Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D), Department of Veterans Affairs. She is a member of the Steering Committee for the Denver VA Targeted Research Enhancement Program, and of the Governing Council of the UCSF/Stanford Evidence-Based Practice Center. Her previous service includes the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society and the Geriatrics Test Committee for the American Board of Internal Medicine/American Board of Family Practice. Dr. Goldstein's research focus is outcomes research in geriatrics and primary care. She leads research projects developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative information technology for guideline implementation. She also leads a project that explores methods for incorporating the impact of improvements in functional status into cost-effectiveness analysis of interventions for older adults.

Joel Tsevat, MD, MPH

Joel Tsevat, MD, MPH is a Professor with tenure at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he is Director of Outcomes Research in the Department of Internal Medicine and Research Director in the Center for Clinical Effectiveness in the Institute for Health Policy and Health Services Research. He is also Director of Health Services Research & Development for the Veterans Healthcare System of Ohio (VISN 10). Dr. Tsevat is a Past-President of the Society for Medical Decision Making, an associate editor of Medical Decision Making, and a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Medicine. He received a BA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Emory University Affiliated Hospitals and a fellowship in Clinical Decision Making and Medical Information Sciences at Tufts-New England Medical Center. Prior to coming to the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Tsevat was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Tsevat's research interests include decision analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, and health-related quality of life assessment, in particular utility assessment.
