This chapter
describes how administrative data may be used to study the care
of dying patients. In particular it examines:
- The Medicare
model of comprehensive hospice care;
- Broad differences
between comprehensive hospice care and palliative care;
- The impact
of the structuring of administrative data on the ability to
study hospice care, end-of-life care, or palliative care; and
- The impact
of coding of services and diagnoses on the ability to study
dying patients and their symptoms.
