Chapter 11: Chemotherapy-Related Nausea & Vomiting: Summary

As we gain a better understanding of the physiological and psychological mechanisms of both nausea and vomiting, research can better focus on identifying treatments and interventions that offer improved efficacy. Many challenges in the design of studies of chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting remain; however, the extent to which these side effects negatively impact cancer patient's quality of life makes continuing research efforts imperative. For many cancer patients who must decide if increasingly aggressive chemotherapy regimens are worth the side effects they will produce, the ability to offer effective antiemetics can tip the scales in favor of life-sustaining treatments.
