Accrual
Relatively few patients
with cancer are enrolled in clinical trials. Only about 25,000
(2.5%) of approximately 1 million patients newly diagnosed with
cancer each year in the United States are enrolled in clinical
trial protocols, despite estimates that 12-44% of patients with
cancer are eligible for entry into protocols (Gotay,
1991).
Accrual figures are
somewhat higher (10% to 30 %) in clinics associated with the National
Cancer Institute-sponsored Community Clinical Oncology Program
(CCOP), which was formed for the purpose of expanding the population
of both physicians and patients available for participation in
clinical trials (American
Medical Association Council on Scientific Affairs, 1991).
