Chapter 11: Chemotherapy-Related Nausea & Vomiting: Introduction
        

While nausea is an essentially subjective experience, vomiting is entirely objective. Definitions utilized for clinical research purposes are summarized below.

Nausea Vomiting
An unpleasant feeling that is accompanied by changes in autonomic nervous system activity, particularly parasympathetic activity, diminished gastric tone and reduced peristalsis. The contents of the intestines will sometimes reflux into the stomach as a result of the retrograde duodenal peristalsis (Allan, 1987)Forceful emptying of the gastric contents via the sustained action of abdominal muscles and the opening of the gastric cardia.(Craig et al., 1987)
